Long-time NFL film guru Greg Cosell recently offered some very high praise for defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile.
While appearing on the Ross Tucker Podcast, Cosell detailed what makes Campanile's defense so difficult to go up against. In short, there are a wide variety of looks that he throws at opposing offenses.
"I think he's a rising star as a D-coordinator with what they do on defense," Cosell said. "I mean, he mixes a lot of different philosophies and concepts and does it so, so well. He mixes those aggressive fronts with sort of that chaos-pressure look, like Brian Flores, but then he also sort of has a more passive, yet highly disciplined four-man D-line pass rush with kind of a Vic Fangio zone-style matchup concepts behind it. But the one thing he does a lot, and they're really good at it is they are a high-percentage stunt defense and they are really, really good at it. As you know, that causes major communication concerns for an offensive line -- it's just difficult. "

Campanile's malleable system also allows him to really tailor the week-to-week game plans based on what the opponent does, while also building the system around the skill sets he has available to him on the roster. This is not a one-size-fits-all playbook.
