Tottenham are still hoping to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi is understood to be a big fan of the Dutch international, alongside Manchester City’s Savinho, reports Fabrizio Romano.

The Merseysiders are not currently open to the idea of parting ways with the former PSV attacker. However, their ongoing talks with PSG to sign Bradley Barcola could help swing things in Spurs’ favour.

Tottenham still keen on Cody Gakpo signing

It’s worth highlighting that Gakpo isn’t guaranteed to be wearing the famous red shirt once the window closes on September 1.

That’s because Liverpool themselves are also hopeful of bolstering the flanks with two new signings – one of whom could very well be the supremely expensive Barcola.

“Don’t forget that Tottenham aren’t only working on Savinho – because they want to sign two wingers – Savinho, but also Cody Gakpo,” the Italian transfer news expert said on his eponymous YouTube channel.

“Cody Gakpo, for Tottenham, is another top priority. De Zerbi wants two wingers: one is Savinho, the other is Gakpo. Then, if one of these two deals can’t happen, there are alternatives. For example, they like Pedro Neto and there are other names.

“But at the moment, the priority remains to go for Savinho and Cody Gakpo.”

Romano went on to add: “Obviously, for Cody Gakpo, it depends if Liverpool open doors or not. In this case, the Barcola story could be important.”

It remains to be seen who exactly Andoni Iraola’s men would prioritise after the France international, given recent reporting has indicated that Ibrahim Mbaye may fall outside of our ideal price range.

However, with the Senegalese winger said to be valued at around €50m [£42.7m], one has to question where exactly Liverpool believe they’ll find better value elsewhere in the right winger market.

Pay the money for Ibrahim Mbaye, Liverpool

If we work on the assumption that Tottenham are indeed planning to offer €80m [£68.3m] for Savinho, you could forgive Liverpool for arguing that Gakpo sits at a similar price point – if not more. Certainly, it seems that our absolute bottom as far as the 27-year-old is concerned is £70m.

At that point, you’re potentially covering a huge chunk of the deal that could bring Bradley Barcola to Anfield (let’s say £120m, for the sake of argument), effectively signing Barcola for roughly £50m or so.

On that basis, how is Ibrahim Mbaye considered “too expensive” at £42.7m?

Yes, we understand he’s relatively inexperienced at 18. But the winger market – especially on the right flank – isn’t exactly popping off, is it?

If you were to say at the start of the window that we’d end up signing both Bradley Barcola and his PSG teammate for roughly £90m, we’d have bitten your hand off!
