Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have confirmed an agreement to sell a minority stake in the Premier League club to 1892 Holdings, a consortium featuring several prominent global investors.

The consortium is led and managed by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, while K5 Sports and the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine are also involved.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is participating as the lead investor in the K5 Sports fund, marking his first significant move into sports investment after previously being linked with potential NFL acquisitions.

FSG have not disclosed the size or value of the stake, although The Athletic reports that it is expected to be around 30 per cent to one-third of Liverpool.

Crucially, FSG will retain majority ownership and operational control, meaning the investment is not expected to result in changes to Liverpool’s existing leadership or day-to-day management.

Bhatia will become Liverpool’s vice-chairman once the transaction is completed, while Elaine Saverin and K5 Sports’ Bryan Baum will also join the board.

Bezos himself is not expected to take a board position despite his involvement in the investment.

“That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world,” FSG president Mike Gordon said of Liverpool’s long-term strategy.

The transaction represents Liverpool’s most substantial outside investment since FSG purchased the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks in October 2010.

Dynasty Equity previously acquired approximately three per cent of Liverpool in September 2023, with that investment helping finance infrastructure projects, re-purchase the Melwood training ground and reduce bank debt.

The latest agreement is considerably larger and brings investors with extensive backgrounds across technology, finance and global business into Liverpool’s ownership structure.

However, supporters should not necessarily expect the transaction to immediately produce a huge increase in transfer spending.

Liverpool have largely operated under a self-sustaining model during FSG’s ownership, with revenue generated by the club reinvested into football operations and infrastructure.

Football’s financial regulations also limit the extent to which additional owner investment can simply be channelled towards player recruitment.

Nevertheless, the consortium could strengthen Liverpool commercially, potentially creating new partnerships and revenue opportunities that increase the club’s spending capacity over the longer term.

The agreement does not automatically represent the first stage of a complete FSG exit either, with Liverpool maintaining that there is no predetermined pathway towards 1892 Holdings acquiring majority control.

FSG have overseen considerable sporting and commercial growth since their takeover, including two Premier League titles and Champions League success.

The proposed investment now represents another significant development in Liverpool’s ownership structure, although completion remains subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.
