Interest rate dynamics

Apropos ‘Are we trapped in a high interest rate cycle,’ (September 11). India risks being ensnared in a high-interest-rate cycle as mounting Western public debt keeps global yields elevated, encouraging capital shifts towards safer assets and intensifying rupee pressure.

Persistent depreciation could make crude oil, machinery and essential imports costlier, aggravating inflation and external vulnerabilities.

The RBI faces a difficult trade-off: ease rates to revive growth or retain monetary tightness to defend currency stability. Higher borrowing costs, however, constrain investment, consumption and fiscal space.

‘Striking’ banks

This refers to ‘Banking services impacted as unions go on nationwide strike to press for 5-day workweek’ (September 11). It was intriguing that the UFBU-led strike call, representing 90 per cent of bank staff, could largely be attributed to the Finance Ministry’s lukewarm response even as the IBA having already consented thereto.

The government should have either way decided on this issue, which has been hanging fire. Why keep the pot boiling forcing the bank strike to strike, much to the public’s discomfort?

NSE listing

With reference to ‘Much ado over NSE listing on BSE’ (September 11). The proposed listing of the NSE on its rival exchange raises legitimate questions about governance, conflicts of interest and investor confidence. Listing may improve transparency, but the process must be independent and beyond procedural doubt.

SEBI should prescribe safeguards for information sharing, surveillance and decision-making where the exchanges interact. The arrangement should ensure that neither exchange receives preferential access to sensitive market data. Clear separation of regulatory, commercial and operational functions would reduce potential conflicts.

Ultimately, investors will judge the move by market fairness and integrity. Strong disclosure norms and continuous oversight are therefore essential over time.
