Leeds and Borussia Mönchengladbach finalise €10m Nico Elvedi transfer, yet one obstacle remains

Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi is moving ever closer to a Premier League switch after the Bundesliga club reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Leeds United. Florian Plettenberg reports the two clubs have now settled on the framework of a transfer worth approximately €10m. In something of an anomaly for a player of Elvedi’s age (29), Gladbach are also expected to secure a 15 percent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

Elvedi has already agreed personal terms with Leeds on a contract through 2029 and wants to make the move to England. A final completion of the transfer nevertheless remains dependent upon another piece of business involving the two clubs. Leeds defender Sebastiaan Bornauw remains in talks over a move to Hamburg. According to the latest report, Elvedi’s switch is still connected to the Belgian centre-back completing his own departure from Elland Road.

Provided that domino falls, Gladbach appear ready to sanction the departure of one of their longest-serving players. The advanced nature of negotiations was reflected in Elvedi’s absence from Saturday’s friendly against Aston Villa. The 29-year-old was deliberately left out of the squad in order not to jeopardize the prospective transfer. Kevin Diks and Jan Leszczyński instead started in central defence.

Elvedi’s likely exit would represent a significant change to the defensive hierarchy outlined in Get German Football News’2026/27 Borussia Mönchengladbach tactical preview. The Swiss defender entered preseason as one of the experienced anchors of Eugen Polanski’s defensive unit and a projected starter alongside Diks. His departure would consequently remove both considerable Bundesliga experience and one of the few remaining long-term constants from a squad undergoing substantial reconstruction.

Gladbach continue major defensive overhaul

A €10m sale would nevertheless represent useful income for a player entering the final year of his contract. Gladbach have already been rebuilding the defensive group this summer. Diks remains a central figure, while the squad has undergone further changes around him.

Right-back Yukhym Konoplya arrived before immediately suffering a knee ligament injury, forcing Borussia to react by adding Daiki Hashioka. Konoplya was meant to replace American right back Joe Scally while Hannover’s David Herold was acquired as an upgrade for left back Lukas Ullrich.

The expected Elvedi departure would create another vacancy requiring consideration before the transfer deadline. From Leeds’ perspective, the Swiss international offers an experienced Bundesliga defender capable of immediately strengthening their options.

For Gladbach, the transfer would also mark the end of an era. Elvedi has been a fixture at Borussia-Park for eleven years, but the club now appear prepared to cash in rather than risk losing him for significantly less as his contract runs down.

With a verbal €10m agreement reportedly in place, a 15 percent sell-on clause negotiated and Elvedi already committed to Leeds through 2029, only the final domino now appears to stand between the Swiss defender and his first move to the Premier League.
