Joshua Báez needed exactly one pitch to announce his arrival in Major League Baseball. The St. Louis Cardinals’ prized outfield prospect attacked the first pitch of his first career plate appearance Saturday and launched it over the wall at Wrigley Field for his first major league home run.

One pitch. One swing. One unforgettable introduction.

The Cardinals and MLB immediately shared videos of the remarkable moment as Báez rounded the bases in front of a stunned Chicago Cubs crowd.

It was difficult to imagine a more emphatic beginning for one of the most powerful young hitters in baseball.

Cardinals prospect hype becomes instant reality

St. Louis promoted Báez from Triple-A Memphis before Saturday’s game, placing him directly into the lineup for his major league debut. The 23-year-old arrived after dominating Triple-A pitching throughout the season. Báez hit .256 with 34 home runs, 90 RBIs, 22 doubles and 21 stolen bases across 103 games for Memphis.

His 34 homers led Triple-A and were tied for second among all minor league hitters at the time of his promotion. That power translated immediately.

Rather than taking a pitch to settle into his first major league plate appearance, Báez trusted the aggressive approach that carried him through the Cardinals’ system. He identified a hittable offering and unleashed the swing St. Louis fans had been waiting to see.

The result made Báez part of the exclusive group of players to homer in their first major league at-bat. Doing it on the first pitch made his debut even more memorable.

Báez delivers the jolt St. Louis wanted

The Cardinals promoted Báez while attempting to remain relevant in the National League playoff race. St. Louis entered the weekend at 61-61 and 3 1/2 games behind the final NL wild-card position. Its offense managed only one hit during Friday’s 3-0 loss to Chicago, creating an obvious need for additional power.

Báez supplied it at the earliest possible moment. His promotion was not based on one hot stretch. Báez hit 20 home runs and stole 54 bases between High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield in 2025. He then took another major step at Memphis, including a four-homer game June 16 and a 473-foot grand slam in July.

Assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio recently explained that Báez did not need to chase home runs because his power naturally follows when he concentrates on making quality contact.

His first major league swing provided a perfect demonstration.

One home run does not define what Báez will become for the Cardinals. It did, however, show why the organization believed his bat was ready for the biggest stage. St. Louis called up its most dangerous minor league slugger looking for energy.
