Jordan Spieth was one of the stars of the show on Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship as he pushed to make it inside the top 50 and earn his spot at the BMW Championship.

Spieth was the one player who made it to the FedEx Cup playoffs this year without registering a single top 10 on the PGA Tour.

Unfortunately, that run continued at TPC Southwind. Spieth was unable to do enough to ensure that he secured his spot in all of the signature events in 2027.

Nevertheless, the Texan left Memphis feeling optimistic about the state of his game. Spieth claimed that he is extremely close to playing great golf.

However, many of those who have heard the comments do not agree with the three-time major champion.

Fans baffled by Jordan Spieth’s comments after the FedEx St. Jude Championship

It is remarkable that Spieth has not finished higher than 11th all season. It is more than four years since his last victory on the PGA Tour. Meanwhile, his most recent top 10 in a major came at The Masters in 2023.

In response to his latest comments, one viewer wrote on social media: ‘Sorry but Jordan continues to be in denial about the state of his game. He’s running on a combination of vibes, inspiration and improbable recoveries. Box office maybe but it’s sad to see a unique talent fail at the basics which underpin elite pro golf. He must address reality.’

Another said: ‘Looks completely lost out there – honestly think he needs to play every single weekend if he can for the next 6 months.’

Someone else suggested that Spieth’s incredible form at the start of his career has proved to be the anomaly, writing: ‘Is he a unique talent? Or is he a guy that got really hot with the putter for a few years? Unique talent to me is someone that’s extremely good at something…. He’s pretty meh at everything from a pro golfer perspective‘.

Similarly, one person said: ‘Poor Jordan is now just a journeyman. We’ve heard this all year long. I hope he wins again one day but I won’t hold my breath. Forget about the career Grand Slam. Try just winning the Barracuda Championship, Puerto Rico Open or Corales Puntacana. Win in a weak field first.‘

There have also been plenty of calls for Spieth to change the team around him. He has worked with Cameron McCormick throughout his career, while Michael Greller has always been on his bag.

One person wrote: ‘Totally delusional. Change your putter, get a new coach who gets you back to playing naturally (improved this year) and time for a new caddie who will keep you from making dumb decisions and spending the day making lame excuses for poor shots. Stop making excuses.’

Another said: ‘Time to change his entire team or enjoy continuing his decline‘. And finally, someone else simply posted: ‘Fire your whole team. It isn’t working‘.

Jordan Spieth has a golden opportunity to prove a point during the Fall

It is going to be very interesting to see what the coming months hold for Spieth.

If he is truly convinced that he is closing in on some great form, then he is surely unlikely to change much.

But it would be good to see Spieth make a number of appearances over the winter. If he really is building momentum, then he should want to play several more tournaments over the Fall to ensure that he has found that next level ahead of 2027.

The problem is that fans have clearly grown weary of hearing just how close Spieth is to rediscovering his best form.

Ultimately, LIV Golf had not even announced their first event when Spieth last won on the PGA Tour. Jackson Koivun was 12 when Spieth last won a major championship.

It is getting harder to make the case that Spieth will ever get near the level he was at when he burst onto the scene.
