Jordan Spieth has really struggled with his game over the past few years.

However, Spieth was much like his old self on day one of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The 33-year-old from Dallas, Texas, posted a sublime round of five-under par 65 at TPC Southwind on Thursday.

Jordan Spieth made five birdies and 13 pars on day one and his round was a welcome respite from his poor recent form.

Spieth was the only player to make the PGA Tour playoffs without a top 10 finish to his name all season long, and that is truly remarkable.

Now he will be desperate not only to record his first top 10 of the season at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but also to win for the first time in more than four years.

Jordan Spieth admits he has made a big mistake on the PGA Tour in 2026

The three-time major champion spoke to reporters after his opening-round 65 at TPC Southwind on Thursday.

He was clearly delighted with his performance on day one in Memphis, but he admitted he made a big mistake this year.

Spieth was asked whether he has learned anything from being ‘on the bubble’ towards the end of the season over the past few years.

“Yeah, it was tough. I think the tougher part was the last couple of years I was very clearly going in this direction (indicating down). I was not as good as I was earlier in the season,“ he said.

“I had a lull this season from essentially Memorial through the British where I was kind of trying to do — press something that I probably didn’t need to, and it got me in trouble.

“But I stayed on it for five or six weeks and didn’t get many results there.“

Jordan Spieth pleased with his form in 2026

In general, Spieth firmly believes that he has deserved more this season, given the way he has played.

“The rest of the season statistically has been very good. I just missed a lot of those big events of just finishing in the top 20 like I did most of the other events this year, which would have left this week to be completely stress-free,” he said.

“But outside looking in versus inside trying to hold onto it is a little different mentality, maybe helpful, but after a good start that all changes, right?

“I just feel that I’m — I just feel like, as I just mentioned, I’m just in a very different place about the game of golf than I was the last couple seasons heading into this event.

“Again, if it’s going to work out, great. If it doesn’t, I know next year is going to be an awesome year for me. So it takes a lot of the stress off of this week.“
