Jon Scheyer shares Duke's intriguing recruiting strategy

During the recruiting process, especially when dealing with highly ranked recruits, some coaches would make promises about playing time and having a role as a starter. That’s not how Duke’s Jon Scheyer handles things, though. "One of the ways we build our foundation starts with the recruiting process,” he said. “I'm not promising an exact role, starting spot, whatever it may be...” Scheyer is involved in recruiting some of the top players in the country to Durham as he enters his fifth season in charge. He’s shown that he can win those recruiting battles in massive ways, including landing back-to-back Wooden Award winners in Cooper Flagg and Cameron Boozer. But to build the program the way he wants – and likely how he learned from Mike Krzyzewski – no favorites are played when they arrive on campus or when sitting in the family living room discussing why Duke would be the best choice for the recruit. It’s also how he handles players that have played for him in previous years. "Whether you're a guy in our program that's been here two or three years, whether you're an incoming freshman, whatever your ranking is, it doesn't matter at the end of the day,” Scheyer said. “It's about what you do and what you earn. And that goes for our program as well; we're not entitled to any wins this season.
