Joe Root was appointed England Test captain for a second time on July 30, with the England and Wales Cricket Board confirming the decision following Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket. The 35-year-old takes charge alongside newly appointed Test head coach Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, who replaces Brendon McCullum in the role after the latter's removal as red-ball head coach.

Root's first assignment back in charge is a three-Test home series against Pakistan, opening at Headingley on August 19, 2026. Speaking ahead of that first Test, Root was clear that he has no intention of abandoning the aggressive, positive approach associated with the Stokes-McCullum era, widely known as Bazball.

"I don’t think there’s a huge amount we need to change. It’s small things that will make a big difference. “It’s not about ripping it up, I think it’s about keeping a lot of the good stuff we’ve been doing for a period of time, stuff that Ben and Baz built for a long while. “I don’t believe there is one way of playing Test cricket. You’ve got to be adaptable and play the situation. It’s never the same throughout five days, there’s different challenges and you’ve got to adjust to the ebbs and flows throughout," Root said in the pre-match press conference, as quoted by The Independent.

Why did Root return as England Test captain?

Stokes' departure from international cricket in July 2026 left England without their most prominent leader, and McCullum's simultaneous exit as red-ball head coach created a full reset at the top of the Test setup. The ECB turned to Root as their most experienced available candidate to rebuild the leadership structure. Root's first captaincy stint ran from 2017 to 2022, during which he led England in 64 Tests and won 27 of those matches, though the tenure ended on an unhappy note, where England managed just one win in their last 17 games.

"The landscape is different. I’m a different player and person than I was when I (first) took over as captain. “I’m in a very fortunate, unique position where I’ve got 60-odd games of experience to look back on. There are things I might want to change and do slightly differently. I had time to step away, play in a different environment, different coach, different captain, and see the game from a different lens. In many ways I feel as ready as any other England captain that’s been before, and to have that amount of experience is invaluable." Root said.

What does Root's second stint mean for England's Test setup?

Root's stated approach is one of continuity rather than overhaul. He has been explicit that the principles Stokes and McCullum introduced will remain central to how England play Test cricket, while leaving room for tactical adjustments as individual matches demand.

Fleming's appointment as head coach adds a significant layer of experience to the new-look management team. A five-time IPL-winning coach with Chennai Super Kings and a former international captain himself, Fleming brings a fresh perspective to a setup that had been shaped almost entirely by McCullum's methods since 2022. He will, however, take over only in December for the South Africa series, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick taking over on an interim basis for the Pakistan series.

Root's batting record and his 64-Test captaincy experience give England a settled base from which to begin the Pakistan series. Root's return also resolves the immediate leadership question the ECB faced after Stokes stepped away, with the Headingley opener now serving as the first real test of the new partnership.
