Despite his son leading the Boston Celtics this year, Jayson Tatum’s father expects the New York Knicks to win the NBA championship.
Tatum was a key part of the Celtics’ run to the 2024 NBA championship, but spent the majority of the last two years on the sidelines due to a brutal Achilles injury.
After making a full recovery and now being the only superstar on the Celtics following Jaylen Brown’s trade, the hope among the Boston faithful is that Tatum can bring them back to glory.
Jayson Tatum’s dad expects New York Knicks to run it back
During an appearance on the Ultimate Dads: Unplugged podcast, Jayson Tatum’s father, Justin Tatum, was asked who he expects to win the NBA championship.
Rather than back his own son’s team, Tatum went for their Atlantic Conference rivals and picked the New York Knicks to win the NBA championship.
“Realistically? S—, I might say New York might run it back… Right now, with their roster? S—…”
The rest of the panel, which included the fathers of LaMelo Ball, Jaylen Brown, and Dwyane Wade, seemed to back their sons’ teams over the Knicks or other rivals.
On the other hand, Dwyane Wade Sr. didn’t back any team, given that his son has been retired from the NBA for years.
It’s odd to see Tatum’s father not give his son a chance at winning it all again, given how prolific he has been over the last few years.
Even though the Celtics’ roster has gotten weaker with the departure of Jaylen Brown, Tatum is still one of the elite two-way players in the NBA and has shown he can be a leader on the court.
The concern right now is that Tatum cannot deliver the clutch performances that Brown did during their 2024 run to the NBA title, for which Brown earned Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP honours.
But the Celtics are still considered one of the heavyweights in the East, who cannot be ruled out of making a run to the NBA Finals.
