Jaguars HC Coen Encourages Trevor Lawrence to Keep Making Play with His Legs

One of the major reasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars' success last season was the career season from quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence finally looked like the franchise QB the team was expecting when they drafted him first overall in 2021. Though he had shown flashes of his incredible talent over his first four seasons, Lawrence was able to put it all together for an entire season in 2025. Liam Coen was Lawrence's fourth head coach in only five seasons. The rookie HC proved to be the right one and was the first to bring out Lawrence's full potential. Coen is one of the brightest offensive minds and best play-callers in the league. Lawrence and Coen have the potential to grow into one of the NFL's elite quarterback-coach duos. A big part of Lawrence's leap last year was his ability to make plays with his legs as well as his arm. Not only did he throw for over 4,000 yards and a career-high 29 touchdowns, but Lawrence also added 359 rushing yards. His additional nine scores on the ground nearly doubled his previous best of five. Having a quarterback who can run is great. Having a quarterback who knows when to run is even better. Too often, a QB with great rushing ability gives up on his progressions too soon and takes off. That is not the case with Lawrence, who has developed the patience to go through all his reads before deciding to run. Coach Coen trusts his QB to make the right call and is encouraging Lawrence to continue making plays with his legs.  Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Coen talked about Lawrence's ability to run and wants to make sure the sixth-year signal-caller doesn't forget that aspect of his game. “When Trevor keeps it simple, goes through a read, and then, hey, man, he doesn't like it, he has the opportunity and athleticism to use his legs as a weapon. It's something that we benefited greatly from last season, especially in the red zone. And just continuing to urge him to be himself, to go be the quarterback that you are while using your arm as a weapon, but don't forget about using your legs, and that's such a huge advantage. I know our defensive staff hates preparing for a quarterback that can extend plays with his legs and be able to get out of the pocket and make plays.” Defenses will have a difficult enough time trying to stop Lawrence from hitting wide receivers like Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, and Travis Hunter this season. Covering all those guys is a tall task, and having Lawrence beat them with his legs when they do can be back-breaking for a defense. Final Thoughts Lawrence's emergence as a dual-threat quarterback helped take Jacksonville's offense to another level last year. If that becomes an even bigger part of his game this season, the Jaguars should have one of the most lethal offenses in the NFL. Jacksonville has weapons everywhere for Lawrence to get the ball to. The team may have the deepest WR room in the league. Brenton Strange leads a tight end group that is both young and talented. Even with all those guys to spread the ball around to, Lawrence's legs can be one of the offense's most dangerous weapons this season.  Coen wants to make sure that Lawrence doesn't forget it.
