Good morning! We have some exciting news for you. This newsletter is getting a makeover.

Welcome to Extra Credit, which helps you get ahead — inside and outside class. It’s going to be like In Short (still a quick daily briefing!) but even more fun. We’ll have your dispatches from campuses across the country. We’ll take your questions. And we may even help you find your crush via a Missed Connections section. Submit your stories here.

But first: We’re celebrating our new era with a back-to-school guide. Today’s the first day, and our friends at Cooking have the best dorm room recipes for you. I swapped my laptop for a chef’s hat and made a three-course meal in my New York apartment. If I can do it, you can do it.

We’re also covering:

  • Your five talking points of the day

  • What college newspaper editors are reporting on this semester

  • How Gen Z answers the phone

A three-course dorm meal

Can you cook a meal in your kitchenless dorm room?

You probably can’t slow-roast an entire piece of meat (but let me know if you’ve tried). But you can try one of these 24 cheap and easy recipes from my friends at NYT Cooking. With their help, I crafted a decadent and delicious three-course dorm menu. You’ll need a microwave.

Appetizer

First up, a potato. After 11 minutes in the microwave on 50 percent power, with one flip, it was steaming and just cooked through. (Watch your potato size. The recipe called for a medium potato, but mine was probably too large — so it wasn’t fluffy enough.)
