Ignoring the Bounty: Why the Owner of the Cooper Flagg Debut Patch Is Taking His Time
When 50-year-old Jason from Clover, South Carolina bought the Dallas Mavericks in a group card break, he was simply hoping to hit a nice card of basketball’s top rookie. Instead, he pulled what has quickly become the most talked-about piece of modern cardboard on the planet: the 1-of-1 Cooper Flagg NBA Rookie Debut Patch Autograph.
Almost overnight, a multi-million-dollar feeding frenzy erupted around the card. Public bounties surpassed $3.6 million, major auction houses lined up to court him, and meme culture adopted the hit as a viral phenomenon.
Despite the madness, Jason remains remarkably grounded. Having just picked up the physical card in person, he sat down to discuss the emotional moment he pulled the grail, how he is avoiding the social media noise, and why he feels zero pressure to make a quick multi-million-dollar decision.
Were you specifically hunting for the Cooper Flagg Debut Patch in that break, or did you just happen to end up with the Dallas Mavericks?
Jason: Typically the way I break, I like to go for the big boys when they’re there. I was like, “I’d like to have me a nice Cooper Flagg.” So I bought the Mavericks, sat on it, the break happened, and here we ended up. Are they my team? No, I’m not a real biased sports team guy except for the Atlanta Braves. I like my Panthers and Hornets—the hometown teams—so that’s sort of how it worked out.
Were you watching the break live? What was your physical reaction when the card hit?
Jason: I watched it live on TV. I actually took over the living room TV for a minute instead of watching on my phone just to see what would happen here. When it hit, I went to the floor crying—I ain’t even gonna lie. I was bawling on the floor crying like a baby. What a week for a simple fella, man.
Who was the first person you called to tell, and did they actually believe you?
Jason: I called my oldest son first. Then I called my other son who is standing right next to me, and he didn’t believe me. I was actually driving to the store at the time, and he told me, “Pull over and FaceTime me right now. I wanna see your face. I don’t believe you.”
There has been an unprecedented frenzy around this card, with bounties topping $3.6 million. What goes through your mind when you see numbers like that?
Jason: To be honest with you, I don’t really look at it. I’m not a big internet or social media guy. I hear the buzz around me because my son speaks on it a little bit, but I haven’t indulged myself in the money. I’ve just indulged in the fact that there are going to be experiences that me and my family get to experience that most normal people never see.
With all the hype, do you feel any pressure to make a public decision about what you’re going to do with the card?
Jason: I don’t feel any pressure by any means. It’s life as normal to me until the next move happens. The time will come, but right now I’m just chilling, letting it open itself up to me, and we’ll see.
What has the behind-the-scenes courtship process been like from major auction houses and private buyers?
Jason: I can say they’ve probably done a lot through social media with my son, but I just told him to respect our privacy. Everyone has really respected that up to this point. As of right now, I haven’t made any decision on whether to accept a private offer or consign to an auction house, and honestly, I don’t know when I’ll make that decision.
How long have you been collecting sports cards, and what is usually in your personal collection?
Jason: I’ve been collecting since I was about 12 years old. I’m a big Braves collector. It’s super random, but I recently started a Hank Aaron run trying to collect every one of his cards. That rookie card was gonna be tough, but I think I’ll be alright now! I also collect Dale Murphy, so I’ll probably put one of his PSA 10rookie cards in my collection too.
Are you going to take a break from buying into breaks for a while after hitting the ultimate grail?
Jason: Nah, there are still things I like, so I’ll keep breaking. It’s hard to get to a hobby shop a lot of times since I don’t have one super close to me, so breaking is an easy way for me to stay in the hobby.
What’s your main takeaway from this wild experience so far?
Jason: I just know it’s gonna be a wild ride. There’s a lot to come out of this, and I want to take it slow, try to remember as much as I can, and enjoy it with my family.
