Bangladesh made history on August 16, 2026, defeating Australia by 9 wickets in the 1st Test in Darwin to record their first-ever Test win on Australian soil. The result arrived on the fourth day, with Bangladesh chasing down a target of 57 in just 14.2 overs. It was also their first Test appearance in Australia in 23 years, and they won at the third attempt.

Bangladesh posted 426 in their first innings. Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored 101 on debut in just his second Test match, becoming the first Bangladeshi to score a Test century in Australia. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 65. Josh Hazlewood took 6 for 89 for Australia. Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop took to social media to celebrate the result.

"Momentous achievement for Bangladesh Cricket, and the people of Bangladesh. Surely they're deserving of their flowers and just recognition now from those from whom it has previously been too sparse. Many contributors, Mehidy, Tanzid etc. But Hasan Mahmud in particular has been a very good line bowler for several years now when fully healthy, and possesses a lovely efficient, upright action. Happy for coach Phil Simmons and his squad," Bishop wrote on X.

Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy drive Bangladesh bowling effort

Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings. Hasan Mahmud claimed 6 for 55, a career-best return and his third five-wicket haul in Tests, in just his 15th Test match. Steve Smith top-scored with 71, while Ebadot Hossain took 2 for 39 in support.

Trailing by 228 runs, Australia batted again and reached 284 in their second innings. Cameron Green scored 104 and Smith added 44. Mehidy was the standout Bangladesh bowler, taking 5 for 66 from 33.1 overs at an economy of 2.00. Mahmud added 3 for 56 to finish the match with 9 wickets in total.

Bangladesh needed 57 to win and reached the target for the loss of one wicket. Tanzid was dismissed for a duck by Hazlewood early in the chase. Mominul Haque finished unbeaten on 30 and Shadman Islam on 25 to complete the victory.

Bangladesh's previous Test win over Australia had come at home in Dhaka in August 2017, by 20 runs. The Darwin victory is their first on Australian soil across three attempts.
