Year 3 at the helm of Louisville basketball is a pivotal one for Pat Kelsey.
Fresh off their first NCAA Tournament win since 2017, the Cardinals boast one of the country's most talented — and, reportedly, expensive — rosters on paper, ranking seventh in BartTorvik.com's early projections as of Aug. 26. Can they improve upon last season's 1-9 record against Quad 1A opponents and make the kind of March Madness run that's eluded the program for more than a decade?
Kelsey once again took a trial-by-fire approach to building UofL's nonconference schedule. It's a slate that will test his guys early and often, with plenty of opportunities for them to make a statement.
At least six of Louisville's 13 out-of-conference games will be vs. opponents ranked in Torvik's top 50 as of Sept. 1: Texas Tech (14th), either St. John's (11th) or Oregon (32nd), Texas (15th), Michigan (13th), Kentucky (25th) and Baylor (48th). That number could grow to eight, depending on how the Cards fare during their first appearance in the Players Era 16, which is set for Thanksgiving week in Las Vegas. And only one of these matchups, against the Longhorns in the SEC/ACC Challenge, will be played at the KFC Yum Center.
This begs the question: Does UofL have the toughest sledding in the ACC before conference play begins?

How does Louisville basketball's 2026-27 nonconference schedule compare vs. rest of ACC?
This study starts at the top, with two-time reigning ACC champion Duke — the No. 1 team in Torvik's projections.
Jon Scheyer's Blue Devils have seven games against top-50 squads, six of which resided in the top 15 as of Sept. 1: Florida (fourth), Illinois (sixth), Michigan State (eighth), Gonzaga (10th), UConn (12th), Texas Tech and Georgia (31st). Only one of those matchups, against the Fighting Illini, will be played at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Sorry, Louisville fans. This schedule has the Cards' beat. The only way they can challenge it is by taking the toughest route possible to the Players Era 16 championship, facing St. John's in Round 2 and Tennessee (17th) in Round 3 to guarantee a fourth game in five days at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Waiting for them on the other side of the bracket could be Gonzaga, Michigan, Miami (19th), Alabama (21st), Creighton (40th), Baylor, TCU (49th) or Kansas State (82nd).
UofL does not have as many certified blockbusters as Duke, but second place isn't too shabby. Here's a breakdown of the guaranteed Torvik top-50 nonconference games on the other ACC members' schedules as of Sept. 1:
