Ever since Ben Johnson took over as the Chicago Bears’ head coach, many things have changed, especially the attitude of star quarterback Caleb Williams. The former Heisman trophy winner has always stood out since his college days, earning a reputation of being an unconventional player.
From his days at USC to Chicago, Williams was famous for being himself-vibrant, fun-loving, and completely outspoken. However, amid all the attention and humor, he seems to have undergone a major change. And coach Johnson definitely picked up on this change. During Tuesday’s press conference, Johnson spoke about how focused and mature Williams has become.
“I’ve seen a very composed person every time he steps into the building. This guy might have had a little bit of goofy to him a year ago, and I use that term with love. Now you just see a more serious player and intent every time I’m around him, and I think his teammates feel that as well,” HC Ben Johnson told reporters on Tuesday.
Johnson also confirmed that Williams has a completely different mindset and spends extra time training with his teammates.
“He’s getting to the practice field early,” Johnson added. “He’s making sure his part is taken care of. He’s warmed up. He’s ready to go. He’s staying after with the guys after practice. …And so he’s taken a lot of pride in his approach right now.”

Caleb Williams’ Progress In Just Two Years
As Williams enters his third NFL season, he told the Chicago Sun-Times:
“I’m going to laugh, I’m going to joke, I’m going to be goofy, I’m going to have fun,” said Williams. “But my maturity level has gone up in understanding…What I’m doing for the organization.”
After an impressive year under Johnson, where he threw for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns, Williams is set for an even better third season. With Johnson’s guidance, Williams led the Bears to a playoff spot in 2025.
The Bears start the 2026 season as defending NFC North champions. Thanks to Williams’ growth, there is high hope as they play their first game on Sept. 13 against the Carolina Panthers.
