Heat 'desperate' to sign $298M generational shooter, ex-Warriors future Hall of Famer, 5x All-Star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Miami Heat have had a disappointing offseason, to say the least, even after adding a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal. The free-agency portion of the summer, however, has gone about as poorly as it possibly could have. After missing out on several targets, Miami is now heavily interested in Klay Thompson. The Heat have made it clear that bringing in the four-time NBA champion is a major priority. “If the Mavericks don’t find a trade for Klay Thompson, his representation will likely request a buyout. There appears to be mutual interest between the Heat and Thompson, who could maximize his shooting alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, plus potentially LeBron James,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote. As of now, Thompson is believed to be interested in two potential destinations: the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami. Both teams could be attractive options for the veteran as he considers his next destination. “My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote. The only issue for Miami is that the Heat are currently waiting for a buyout to happen, and there is no guarantee that it will. However, The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer made it clear that Miami is desperate to land Thompson. “To this point the Mavs position has not changed. They would prefer to trade him (Klay Thompson). — All we know is, Miami is desperate for Klay Thompson but they want to sign him as a free agent. They would not be the only team interested,” Fischer said. The Heat are playing a dangerous game while waiting on Thompson, but their desperation shows just how difficult this offseason has been for the organization. Miami also has a major need for shooting, which makes Thompson an even more appealing target. Thompson has made $298 million throughout his career. There is no doubt that Miami needs a reliable shooter if it wants to succeed this season, and the Heat know there may not be a better shooting option available than Thompson. More NBA news:
