It’s been a revolving door at kicker for the Los Angeles Rams since Greg Zuerlein left in 2020. Names such as Sam Sloman, Lucas Havrisik, Brett Maher, Joshua Karty and even Kai Forbath have come and gone, finding mixed results in L.A. Matt Gay was the only reliable option after Zuerlein’s departure but he priced himself out of the Rams’ range in free agency, starting the cycle all over again. It seems Los Angeles has finally found someone it can trust in Harrison Mevis. The former undrafted free agent nicknamed the “Thiccer Kicker” has been a pleasant surprise for the Rams since replacing Karty last season, signing a one-year tender to return this offseason. He’s in line to once again be the Rams’ only kicker this year and Sean McVay couldn’t be happier with how he’s performed thus far. “He's been great,” McVay said of Mevis. “He's just so steady. It doesn't seem like anything phases him, which is a great trait to have as a kicker. He's been really good in a lot of the competitive or the different periods that we've done. He had a really good day today when we activated the field goal unit in the middle of practice. He's got a nice personality about himself and his demeanor and disposition are what you want from your kicker. We expect him to pick up where he left off. He did an amazing job for us last year.” Mevis missed just one kick in the regular season and playoffs combined last year, a 48-yard field goal try in Week 16 against the Seattle Seahawks. He was otherwise perfect, making all 48 PATs and 18 of 19 field goals, with that 48-yarder being his lone miss. The Rams didn’t test Mevis’ power very often, only asking him to attempt two kicks from beyond 50 yards, but he was 2-for-2 on those tries and 9-for-10 from the all-important 40-49-yard range. Special teams was an unmitigated disaster last season, with Joshua Karty being partly to blame for his inaccuracy and slow run-up on kicks. Mevis is much more efficient, using little wasted movement to prevent his line from having to block for a long time like it had to for Karty. If Mevis can perform the way he did last season, the Rams will be significantly better on special teams.
