As the Cleveland Guardians look ahead to the final month of the 2026 season, their path to making it back to the playoffs is entirely in their hands.
The formula for Cleveland couldn’t be any simpler: win.
The Guardians are set to face off against several of the teams they're fighting with for one of the final American League Wild Card spots during September, including their current foe, the Toronto Blue Jays.
After winning the series opener in convincing fashion on Tuesday night, Cleveland lost badly to Toronto on Wednesday evening, 11-0. The Guardians are still in position to win the series on Thursday, but this one loss could have postseason ramifications come the end of the month.
With Toronto’s victory, the Blue Jays officially clinch the season series over the Guardians. That’s important because the head-to-head record is the first playoff tiebreaker in the event that two teams finish with the exact same record once all 162 games have been played.
Given how close the American League playoff race has been all season long, there’s a very good chance one game could be the difference between playing October baseball and getting an early start on the offseason.
Even after this loss, Cleveland is still 1.5 games up on Toronto in the standings, but a lot can change over the next month, and having an extra game on the schedule would have been incredibly valuable.
Unfortunately for the Guardians, that insurance tiebreaker isn’t in their favor when it comes to their matchup with the Blue Jays.
Perhaps the toughest part about the Guardians losing out on the tiebreaker to the Blue Jays is the unfortunate mistakes that let Wednesday night’s game slip away.

Even though the Guardians lost out on the tiebreaker with the Blue Jays, their mentality doesn’t change. If Cleveland wins the majority of their games in September, it should still be in a good position to get back to the postseason.
