Giants fans loudly cheered Cam Skattebo’s first carry Saturday.

The Giants’ preseason opener against the Vikings marked Skattebo’s first game back from last season’s gruesome ankle injury, which he suffered Oct. 26 in Philadelphia.

Though Skattebo’s comeback has been impressive, he knows he can run a lot more forcefully than he did Saturday, when he played five snaps and carried four times for 19 yards, with a long gain of 7.

New Giants coach John Harbaugh wants to use a run-heavy offense, and Skattebo figures to be a huge part of that. But Harbaugh still needs to see more from the second-year sensation.

“I’ve learned that you really can’t evaluate running backs until the tackling starts, until the games start,” Harbaugh said. “I haven’t been around Skatt day to day. I got to see him for the first time in a game [Saturday]. And I don’t think he’s 100%. He would say he’s not.”

Harbaugh did say he liked “the foot quickness, the feel for the game, the explosiveness” that Skattebo showed in limited action against Minnesota.

Skattebo agreed with Harbaugh’s assessment that he’s not all the way back to the heavy-contact level of dominance he flashed as a rookie.

And now, the clock is ticking toward the Sept. 13 season opener against the Cowboys.

“I think [Harbaugh] knows that there’s more to me,” Skattebo said after Monday’s 15th training camp practice.

One thing that remains the same with Skattebo — his defiant determination, as an undersized running back who wants to prove his doubters wrong.

“People know I’m crazy [and that] I like to run through people instead of run around them,” he said. “Hopefully, you’ll see more running around people this year. I don’t really care what people think. If they think I’m not as good of a running back, they’ve still got to play me that week. So whether they think that or not, then I guess we’ll see that week.”
