BILBAO, Spain (AP) — Ghana forward Iñaki Williams announced Friday he is retiring from international soccer.

“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” the 32-year-old said on Instagram. “Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”

Williams was born and raised in Spain but played 28 international games for Ghana, scoring two goals. Before that, he had one senior cap for Spain and 17 for Spain's Under-21 squad. His brother Nico Williams plays for Spain.

Williams played for Ghana at this year's World Cup, where the team was eliminated in the round of 32, and at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Williams plays for Spanish club Athletic Bilbao, where he came up through the club's youth academy.
