New York Mets rookie relief pitcher Jefry Yan has gotten plenty of attention for a unique celebration that features him enthusiastically jumping into the air after recording a strikeout.

And on Saturday, the baseball world got a look at two recent additions to the big leagues colliding to create a hilarious moment: Yan and his celebration, and the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) System.

On an 0-2 count with two outs in the top of the ninth, Yan thought he struck out the Washington Nationals’ Nasim Nuñez. Yan was so confident in the pitch being strike three that he did his high-flying celebration.

When Yan realized that home plate umpire Nestor Ceja ruled the pitch a ball, he immediately tapped his head to challenge the call.

“That’s a ball,” SNY color commentator Keith Hernandez said.

“Yes, it is,” play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen agreed, while laughing.

And the ABS confirmed that the pitch was a ball.

“Now that was funny,” Cohen said.

“The Mets are now out of challenges,” Cohen added. “That part is not funny, because they might need that challenge in the bottom of the ninth. He celebrated, and then he tapped his head.”

Two pitches later, Yan did officially get the strikeout.

“Struck him out!” Cohen said. “Got him with the slider. Now Yan can celebrate. Nuñez flashes him a big smile.”

That ended up being a big out for the Mets. New York scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to get a walk-off victory, giving Yan his first career win.
