Gardner-Webb fires former UTPB head coach Kris McCullough after one game

BOILING SPRINGS, North Carolina (KMID/KPEJ) - Former UT Permian Basin head football coach Kris McCullough is out at Gardner-Webb University after just one game at the helm of the Runnin' Bulldogs. McCullough was suspended Monday pending the outcome of an investigation. Less than 48 hours later, the university announced Wednesday that his contract had been terminated, effective immediately. Gardner-Webb released a brief statement Wednesday afternoon: "Gardner-Webb University announced today that Head Football Coach Kris McCullough's contract has been terminated, effective immediately. Pete Bennett will continue to serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2026 season. The University has no additional comment at this time." McCullough took over the Gardner-Webb program in December and coached just one game. The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the 2026 season with a 35-17 loss to Austin Peay on Thursday. The 30-year-old coach spent the previous three seasons leading UTPB, where he helped elevate the Falcons into one of the Lone Star Conference's top programs. McCullough led UTPB to two playoff appearances, including a run to the quarterfinals, and finished his tenure with a 28-10 record.
