Ashleigh Gardner, vice-captain of the Australian women's cricket team, broke her public silence on August 13, posting a statement through Instagram Stories to address her separation from Monica Wright and the controversy that had followed.

Gardner and Wright had married in April 2025. The dispute entered the public domain in July of this year, when Wright posted cheating allegations on social media, claiming Gardner had been romantically involved with Australian teammate Georgia Voll at the 2025 Women's World Cup held in India. Gardner confirmed in her statement that Cricket Australia's board had reviewed her position and decided to retain her in the leadership role.

'While my separation from my wife is a personal matter, I understand my current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia, given my position as the vice-captain. I am grateful that the CA Board has chosen to support my continued leadership. I look forward to playing a strong role as a leader and providing the best possible support for my teammates in the season to come," Gardner wrote in a post on Instagram Stories.

What did Gardner say about Monica Wright and the request for privacy?

Gardner directed part of her statement toward Wright, acknowledging the time they had shared and expressing regret for the pain the separation had caused. She did not address the specific allegations in detail. Gardner had moved out of the marital home after the separation, and Wright's social media posts preceded Gardner's public response by several weeks.

'I am grateful for the time Monica and I shared and sorry for the pain this has caused. I wish her nothing but happiness and success in the future. I won't be making any further comment on this matter at this time and ask that the privacy of those involved be respected," she further wrote.

How did Cricket Australia respond to the situation?

Cricket Australia addressed the matter by pointing to its existing workplace framework, which covers relationships and potential conflicts of interest across the national setup. The governing body did not confirm specific details of any internal review, but its statement indicated that arrangements had been put in place to protect the integrity of team leadership and processes. The Sydney Sixers, who Gradner represents in the Women's Big Bash League, also stood by their captain throughout the controversy.

'Cricket Australia ensures all relationships within our workforce comply with our Respect at Work policy. This includes putting appropriate conflict-of-interest management arrangements in place to support leadership responsibilities and maintain the integrity of team processes," the board had said in a prior statement.
