From Young to Stones and Spence: Every Englishman to play for Inter Milan after double summer swoop Inter Milan have strengthened their squad this summer with English talent after securing deals for John Stones and Djed Spence. Spence completed his £30m transfer to the Italian champions from Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, and will link up with England teammate Stones at the San Siro, following the latter's free transfer move earlier this summer. Stones and Spence have become only the fourth and fifth Englishman to have signed for one of Italian football's giants. Gerry Hitchens Gerry Hitchens became the first English footballer to sign for Inter Milan after arriving from Aston Villa for a fee of £85,000 in 1961. Hitchens had scored 96 goals in 160 games for Aston Villa, and caught the attention of Inter after netting twice for England in a 3-2 win over Italy in Rome earlier in the year. The forward was Inter's top scorer in his debut season, netting 16 times, and he became the second Englishman to winSerie A during the 1962/63 campaign, after Jimmy Greaves. Hitchen scored 20 goals in 43 games for Inter before moving to Torino. In total, he spent nine seasons in Italy, also representing Atalanta and Cagliari. Paul Ince When Paul Ince's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson became strained at Manchester United, the midfielder made the move to Milan in a £7.5m deal. Ince had been one of the Premier League's best midfielders at Old Trafford, winning two league titles and nine trophies, and soon became a fan favourite at Inter. Ince made 73 appearances for Inter and scored 13 goals. Though trophies proved elusive, his all-action style won him admirers at the San Siro. It's a transfer the former England captain admitted was the best decision of his career. "Once I got there, it was the best, out of all the clubs, it was the best move I ever made. Really was,"Ince recalled. "I mean, the style of football, just the passion of the fans. Everything about it, the weather, the food, everything about it was just perfect." Ince returned to English football in 1997 to sign for Liverpool. Ashley Young Ashley Young followed the path Paul Ince had set in swapping Manchester United for Inter Milan. After eight-and-a-half seasons at Old Trafford, Young signed for Inter in January 2020 for a £1.5m fee. The wing-back spent 18 months at the San Siro and was part of the team that won the 2020/21Serie A title under Antonio Conte. John Stones John Stones signed for Inter Milan as a free agent this summer following the expiration of his contract at Manchester City. Stones spent a decade at Manchester City, winning a wealth of honours that includes six Premier League titles and the Champions League, the latter secured with a 1-0 win over Inter. "This is an incredible shirt to represent, one of the most iconic in football history,"Stone said. "You can feel the greatness of this Club everywhere at the training centre. I’ve seen the trophies, and this is a special team. I’m proud to be part of it. We want to write new chapters in the club’s history." Djed Spence Djed Spence's strong showings for England at the 2026 World Cup attracted interest from Inter Milan this summer. The full-back has signed for the Nerazzurri in a £30m deal to become the fifth Englishman to represent Inter.
