Matt Barnes spent the majority of his professional career in a Boston Red Sox uniform, going from a first-round draft pick out of UConn to a key member of Boston's bullpen and eventually an All-Star.

His career also included one of the biggest achievements in baseball: a World Series championship at Fenway Park.

Now, after more than a decade of professional baseball at the highest level, Barnes has decided that his playing career is over, making his official announcement as his old team navigates a tumultuous and ongoing season.

Former Boston Red Sox All-Star Suddenly Announces Retirement

Barnes officially announced his retirement in a personal message to fans on social media, teammates and the organization that drafted him. It was not immediately clear why Barnes chose now as the time to make the announcement, but he hasn’t pitched in affiliate baseball since he elected free agency from the Washington Nationals organization in May 2024.

“From being drafted by the Red Sox out of Uconn in 2011, making my Major League debut in 2014, winning a World Series in Boston and experiencing Fenway Park as my home are memories I’ll carry for the rest of my life,” Barnes wrote in his retirement update on Threads. “As one chapter closes, I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

The former right-hander also made a point of addressing the organization that gave him his first opportunity to reach the majors.

“To the Red Sox organization,” Barnes added. “You gave me the opportunity to wear one of the most iconic uniforms in sports, and I will always cherish that. Winning a World Series in Boston and experiencing Fenway Park as my home are memories I’ll carry for the rest of my life.”

For Boston fans, Barnes' career is closely connected to the successful period that produced the franchise's 2018 championship.

Former Boston Red Sox World Series Champion Sends Retirement Message Amid Wild Season

Barnes spent nine seasons with the Red Sox and made big-league appearances across 11 total seasons in his career.

“Barnes was a solid-late inning reliever for the Red Sox throughout most of his career, which included a 2021 All-Star selection when he had a dominant first half and finished the season with a 3.75 ERA over 60 appearances,” Justin Terranova reported for the New York Post.

That 2021 season represented the peak of Barnes' individual career. He earned his lone All-Star selection after dominating opposing hitters during the first half of the season and establishing himself as one of Boston's most trusted bullpen arms.

For a player who once dreamed of reaching Fenway Park, Barnes can close his career knowing he accomplished something few players ever do: he became an All-Star and World Series champion with his hometown-of-baseball organization.

And as Barnes himself put it, one chapter has closed. Another is now beginning.
