Former Dolphins weapon reportedly wants to play for Miami again

The Miami Dolphins don't have the most talented roster in the league heading into 2026 after they traded or cut some of their best players this offseason in an effort to turn the page and speed up a rebuild. With that, Miami could still use some help to get the best out of quarterback Malik Willis and to see if he's a long-term answer for the team at the most important position in professional sports. Interestingly, one former Dolphins player is interested in returning to South Florida, as WSVN-TV's Josh Moser recently reported on an episode of the "Fins Faithful Podcast." "Jonnu Smith wants to come back, but [the two sides] ain't there on the money yet," Mosher said. "Why wouldn't you want to come back? I mean, he's here, he's home, but it's also that he wants to compete, and if he's not going to get the money, he wants to go play for a team that he's got a chance to do something with. "When you've got an unproven quarterback, and you're going to be relied on a lot to block, I mean it's not exactly the same zone running scheme that we saw last year with [Mike] McDaniel. But [Bobby] Slowik's been here... look, this team needs help." Smith, 30, spent four seasons with the Tennessee Titans, two with the New England Patriots and one with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Dolphins in 2024. In 17 games, he set franchise records for receptions (88), receiving yards (884) and receiving touchdowns (8) by a tight end on his way to the Pro Bowl. Miami traded Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, and he caught 38 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins are relying on Greg Dulcich, Ben Sims and Will Kacmarek as their top three tight ends right now, and Smith, who has had success in this offense, could be a very helpful addition.
