Mahipal Lomror, the 26-year-old left-arm spinner and middle-order batter, has accepted an opportunity to play County Championship cricket for Surrey. The former Rajasthan state captain and ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru player received the call-up after director of men's cricket Alec Stewart approached him on Saturday, August 8. Lomror pulled out of a scheduled trip to South Africa on August 9, which was part of a Mumbai Indians development project, to pursue the English county opportunity.

Lomror is set to travel to England on Monday to join Surrey's squad. The county is seeking a middle-order batter who can also contribute with left-arm spin bowling, a profile that aligns with Lomror's skill set. Lomror suspects that the partnership between Mumbai Indians and Surrey for The Hundred may have facilitated the introduction to the English club.

"For any cricketer, the County Championship is a huge opportunity, and I am glad that I will get to play alongside some senior players and gain experience," Lomror was quoted as saying by News18.

He added that joining Surrey represents a significant step in his development as a cricketer at the domestic level.

Lomror's first-class credentials

Lomror brings substantial first-class experience to the County Championship. He has played 63 first-class matches, accumulating 3,836 runs at an average of 42.62, with 10 centuries and 17 fifties to his name. During the 2024-25 domestic season, Lomror scored a triple-century against Uttarakhand, demonstrating his capability at the highest domestic level.

IPL experience and skill set

In Twenty20 cricket, Lomror has featured in 40 IPL matches across three franchises: Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians. During the 2024 IPL season, he was a key contributor in Bengaluru's late push towards qualification. At Bengaluru, he earned recognition for his ability to hit spin bowling during the middle overs, a skill that complements his development as an economical all-rounder with left-arm spin.

Surrey are seventh in Division One of the County Championship with 91 points from eight completed matches, with six games remaining in the season. The club's next fixture is against Nottinghamshire at The Oval, starting on Thursday.
