Florida football coach Jon Sumrall says he wants 'traditional colors' for uniforms

Florida football coach Jon Sumrall is all for new uniform combinations, as long as they stick to school colors. The Florida Gators unveiled some new uniform looks on their social media accounts, which included orange jerseys and white pants and an all-blue look that included blue helmets. "I'm pretty staunch on I want our uniform colors to be orange, blue, and white because those are our school colors," Sumrall said. "I'm traditionalist in nature." But Sumrall said he's more focused on preparing his team for the 2026 season than he is with uniforms. He was consulted about uniforms last spring, but admitted his interest in the subject wasn't at the top of his priority list. "My involvement in the meeting probably wasn't great because we're in the middle of spring practice," Sumrall said. "I was worried about the next practice." Sumrall said recruits and players have approached him about wearing black jerseys. The only time Florida wore black in school history, it didn't go well, as Arkansas upset the Gators 39-36 in overtime on Nov. 4, 2023 in The Swamp. "The players love black, man, like love it," Sumrall said. "And I know that's I think the vibe right here has been anti that and black's not in our school colors. But when recruits come in, and I do watch when the recruits come in. I'm like, all right, 'What did they put on?' It's like when a big-time recruit wants to put it on. You're like, 'Well, does that mean we need to wear that in the game?' " On the flip side, the Gators beat Tennessee 31-19 at Neyland Stadium the last time they wore blue helmets on Dec. 5, 2020. "If we win, I I don't care what we wear," Sumrall said. "You just want to win. If you can win, wear whatever you want. It looks good because you won, and you can wear the coolest uniform ever, and lose and the uniform stinks then. So let's win games, and the uniforms will look better."
