Preseason openers aren't supposed to be about winning and losing, but the stakes can feel much different for players fighting to protect their standing on the depth chart.

The Baltimore Ravens will host the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night with several competitions still taking shape. Some players are trying to earn roster spots. Others entered training camp with an opportunity to secure a role but have watched new additions or younger competitors threaten their position.

Rasheen Ali, Danny Pinter, Nick Dawkins, Corey Bullock and Adisa Isaac are among the Ravens with the most to lose against Philadelphia.

Rasheen Ali

Ali entered camp with an opportunity to establish himself behind Derrick Henry and Justice Hill. The Ravens know what their two veteran backs provide, leaving Ali to prove that he deserves a place in the rotation. His preseason workload should give him a chance to make that argument. Ali must run decisively, protect the football and show value in the passing game. Special teams will also factor into the decision.

A strong performance could solidify his standing. A difficult night would create opportunities for Baltimore's other reserve running backs to close the gap.

Danny Pinter

Pinter entered the offseason as a legitimate candidate to replace Tyler Linderbaum at center. The arrival of Ethan Pocic changed the outlook. Pocic now appears positioned to win the starting job, leaving Pinter to compete for a reserve role. That places greater importance on his ability to play multiple positions and perform reliably when the Ravens shuffle their offensive line.

Pinter needs a steady performance against Philadelphia's interior defenders. Trouble with protection calls or pressure up the middle would make his path to a prominent role considerably more difficult.

Nick Dawkins

Dawkins finds himself in a crowded competition for one of Baltimore's final offensive line spots. His ability to play center and guard gives him value, but versatility only matters when accompanied by dependable game performance.

The Eagles should provide a challenging test. Dawkins must show that he can anchor in pass protection, create movement in the running game, and handle communication responsibilities without Baltimore's starting linemen beside him.

Corey Bullock

Bullock faces many of the same challenges as Dawkins. Baltimore has added competition throughout the interior, and there may not be enough roster spots to keep every developmental lineman.

Preseason games are especially important for young guards because physical practices don't completely replicate live defensive movement. Bullock must demonstrate that his size and strength translate when the Ravens can't script the circumstances surrounding each snap.

Adisa Isaac

Isaac's greatest concern has been availability. He has missed valuable time while other young edge defenders, including Kaimon Rucker, have continued competing for snaps. If Isaac is cleared to play, he needs to make his opportunities count. Baltimore will be evaluating more than sacks. Setting the edge, maintaining rush discipline, and contributing on special teams will be equally important.

Bilhal Kone faces a similar challenge in the secondary. Every practice or game he misses gives T.J. Tampa and the other reserve defensive backs another opportunity to strengthen their standing.

Final analysis

The first preseason game won't settle every competition. It will, however, give the Ravens their best evidence yet of which players can be trusted when tackling is live, and assignments become less predictable. Ali, Pinter, Dawkins, Bullock and Isaac can't afford to let that opportunity pass without answering.
