Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White talks with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) on Saturday, May 2, 2026, during the first half of a preseason game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Over the past several months, there have been several instances where fans have questioned the relationship between Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White, but White’s praise for Clark this week seemingly put that to rest.

Even though the two have been involved in some high-profile arguments on the bench and fans have questioned White’s decisions to put Clark on the bench at times, the reality is that White is fully aware of just how special of a player Clark is.

‘Like a maestro’

Following this week’s win over the Dallas Wings – a game in which Clark had a dominant 29 points and 10 assists – White sent a pretty clear message to Clark about what she thinks of her talent.

“She’s like a maestro, the way that she really runs our offense,” White told reporters after the game. “I think when we’re at our best, she is instructing, she is running it much like a show. It’s tough to match up with us when she’s commanding the floor like that.”

Clearly, White loves what Clark brings to the team and acknowledges her greatness.

Clark Supports White

While some fans have questioned the relationship between Clark and White, the reality is that Clark has always had her head coach’s back, even when there is some perceived conflict between the two of them.

Earlier this year, when Clark was benched after a high-profile argument with White on the bench, Clark came out in support of her head coach.

“First of all, two people being competitive. Two people that really want to win. And, you know, I think a lot of those things happen all the time,” Clark said back in June. “And I know there’s a camera on me and that’s how it’s going to be. But there’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that they think they know a lot of things and they’re just blatantly wrong about a lot of things.

“And I ride for Steph. I ride for these girls. Steph has my back more than anybody. So You know, nobody in that locker room, in our locker room, or Steph, or our coaching staff thought twice about it. It’s just another example of what everybody, all of you, want to blow up and make something that is just lost and not in reality.”

Then, last week, Clark came out in support of her head coach after fans booed her before the game after many fans believed she did not defend Fever guard Sophie Cunningham enough after a hard foul from DiJonai Carrington.

“I hated that our fans booed, to be honest, and you can disagree with this and that, I get it,” Clark said after the game on Tuesday. “It’s professional sports, people are going to boo. But, at the end of the day, that’s our head coach and we’re going to ride for her and we’re always going to have her back and that’s never going to tear our locker room apart.”
