The 2. Bundesliga continues to serve as one of Europe’s premier proving grounds for young talent. With clubs increasingly relying on youth to drive their campaigns, here are five rising stars poised for a breakout season.

Javier Fernández (Nuremberg): On loan from Bayern Munich for a second season, the 19-year-old Spanish midfielder proved his class late last term. Working under Miroslav Klose at Der Club, Fernández brings high-level composure, sharp distribution, and remarkable press-resistance to Nürnberg’s central midfield.

Nicolas Verkooijen (Darmstadt): The 19-year-old Belgian U21 international arrived on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven this summer and instantly inherited Darmstadt’s No. 10 jersey. Combining intense off-ball pressing with creative vision, he is expected to be the Lilien’s primary attacking catalyst.

Rafael Pinto Pedrosa (Karlsruhe): A dynamic, high-energy right-back who was recently named in the Team of the Tournament at the 2026 U19 European Championship. Pinto Pedrosa combines elite recovery speed with sharp overlapping deliveries, making him one of the most exciting wide defender prospects in German football.

Mika Wallentowitz (Greuther Fürth): On loan from Schalke 04, the 18-year-old wide midfielder brings versatility, physical drive, and raw pace to Fürth’s flanks after gaining valuable senior minutes during Schalke’s promotion campaign.

Paul Hennrich (Heidenheim): Recruited from Hoffenheim’s renowned academy setup, the highly touted technician adds flair, clever half-space movement, and immediate goal threat between the lines.
