GREEN LIGHT 🚦
QB Jared Goff vs. Saints: He’s never been a flashy player or much of a runner, so his consistent passing stats can be overlooked sometimes. Goff does his best work on the Detroit fast track, with a career 107.5 passer rating in Ford Field, with 94 touchdown passes in 42 games. It’s possible you drafted Goff as a platoon candidate with another option; this is one of the weeks where you gladly press “play.”RB Jaylen Warren vs. Falcons: He was a capable receiver last year and this season he gets to chase after some of those 85 targets that Kenny Gainwell vacated. Rico Dowdle will also have a consistent role here, but Warren has the ability to settle in as a weekly contributor as an underrated RB2. Keep in mind, Aaron Rodgers doesn't want to get hit -- and he loves dumping the ball off to his running backs.QB Tyler Shough at Lions: Very quietly he was the QB4 over the final six weeks of 2025, and the music can keep playing in what’s expected to be a high-scoring opener in Detroit. The Lions are down three pieces from their secondary, and this game features a 49.5-point total, one of the highest of the week.
RB Bucky Irving at Bengals: While there are definitely talented backs behind Irving — Kenneth Gainwell is a great pass-catcher and Sean Tucker also has ability — let’s not lose the plot here. Gainwell has never averaged even seven carries in any season, and Tucker had to take a pay cut to stay in Tampa. Irving operates behind one of the best offensive lines in football and he’s not a zero in the pass game. He probably has 18-20 touches in his back pocket even before the game starts.
RB Tony Pollard vs. Jets: The New York defense was gashed against the run last year, allowing the most points to the running back position. Pollard will be a game-flow concern in most weeks, but this is the rare spot where we can dial him up as a home-game favorite.
YELLOW LIGHT 🚦
RB Jeremiyah Love at Chargers: Given where he was drafted all summer, it’s reasonable that Love is going to be in everyone’s lineup. Just remember that he’s been dealing with a high ankle sprain for weeks and the Cardinals also envision a role for veteran RB Tyler Allgeier. Arizona is also a 9.5-point underdog, so it’s likely the game script will be a mess.WR DJ Moore at Texans: The Houston defense has been a nightmare for Josh Allen in the past (remember the eight-sack party last November?) and Moore is likely to see cover ace Derek Stingley Jr. for much of the day. Moore was bought in to be an alpha for the Buffalo passing game, but it will take time for him to build chemistry with Allen. Keep expectations realistic here.RB MarShawn Lloyd at Vikings: His long-term upside is now capped with Josh Jacobs getting some favorable news this week, but Lloyd still enters Week 1 as the presumed lynchpin in the Green Bay backfield. The Vikings can be a nightmare with their chaotic blitz packages, but the run defense was gettable last year, and Green Bay was successful pounding the rock in both of the meetings.
WR Courtland Sutton at Chiefs: The Kansas City defense was strong against outside receivers last year and Sutton is the presumed WR2 in Denver after the Jaylen Waddle trade. But Sutton is such a dynamic player in tight spots and inside the red zone, we have to keep a fair amount of touchdown equity tied to his case. He’s still a solid depth piece for most rosters.
RED LIGHT 🚦
QB Patrick Mahomes vs. Broncos: Denver’s defense is a difficult draw for anyone, and it’s been especially sharp against Mahomes, holding him to just three touchdown passes (against four picks) over the last four meetings. Mahomes isn’t getting the ball downfield, either, with a 6.3 YPA or lower in the last three visits. Mahomes dropped into the QB1/QB2 seam during draft season and shouldn’t be viewed as an automatic starter as we open the year.TE Kyle Pitts Sr. at Steelers: You likely drafted him as a starter so we understand if you're stuck for a better pivot. But be wary that Pitts had mediocre splits when Drake London was in uniform last year, and the Atlanta QB room is filled with concerns.WR Alec Pierce vs. Ravens: He’s been the league’s best deep threat for two straight years and earned that juicy extension, but he’s coming off ankle surgery and is currently dealing with a sore heel. Pierce has the looks of a slow-starting player, and the Colts will likely rely on teammate Josh Downs against a Baltimore defense that struggles in slot coverage.
WR KC Concepcion at Jaguars: The exciting rookie has the versatility to play all over the formation, and creative head coach Todd Monken should be good for him. But until the Browns find some stability in their quarterback room, it’s difficult to try any speculation plays here. Deshaun Watson might be out of upside at this point, leaving us to squint and hope that Shedeur Sanders can do something in a few weeks. Be patient with Concepcion.
RB Jonathon Brooks vs. Bears: There are two ACL injuries in his history and he’s currently dealing with a groin injury. Brooks is also a complete unknown so far as a pro, stuck on 12 career touches. If there’s ever a player we need to see it from first, it’s Brooks.
