The Atlanta Falcons have signed veteran edge rusher Za'Darius Smith to a one-year, $6 million contract that could be worth up to $8 million with incentives. After losing Jalon Walker for the season with a torn ACL and James Pearce Jr. to an eight-game suspension, the Falcons needed some help along the edge. Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, has recorded 343 tackles (223 solo), 70.5 career sacks and 176 QB hits since entering the league as a fourth-round pick with the Baltimore Ravens in 2015. After spending his four NFL years with the Ravens (2015-2018), Smith signed with the Green Bay Packers in free agency and had the most productive two-year stretch of his career. The 33-year-old made two Pro Bowls in Green Bay and recorded 26 sacks (13.5 in 2019 and 12.5 in 2020). Over the last four seasons, Smith has played for the Minnesota Vikings, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. Since the Falcons had a roster spot available, no corresponding move was needed. Smith will wear the No. 91 this season, according to the team's official website. The Falcons will return for their second preseason game on Saturday afternoon against the Indianapolis Colts. The teams have two scheduled joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday in Indianapolis. Saturday's game starts at 1 p.m. ET.
