When Luke Kuechly walked away from the NFL at 28 years old, the prevailing assumption was that he’d take his encyclopedic football knowledge with him and would be well on his way to becoming the defensive boy genius version of Tony Romo.

But Kuechly craved a life still embedded in football, and that meant a job in the Panthers’ front office as a pro scout. Kuechly lasted roughly a season before resigning in the spring of 2021, later explaining that he simply wanted to reclaim his fall weekends back for hunting and fishing and for family, rather than surrender to another season buried in cutups and advance reports. For a while afterward, broadcasting looked far from imminent. He wasn’t pursuing it, and no network seemed especially eager to pursue him either.

Luke Kuechly says wanting to hunt and fish led him to resign his pro scouting post w Panthers. “A lot of that happens in the fall. It’s hard to do both.”

Fast forward to now, and Kuechly is somehow the most fought-over analyst in football media.

The latest domino fell on Monday, when The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reported that Kuechly will join Peyton Manning for The Breakdown, ESPN’s Monday Night Football companion show that lives on the ESPN app. Manning originated it with Bill Belichick two seasons ago, a cerebral Friday lead-in to his looser ManningCast work with brother Eli. When Belichick departed for the North Carolina head-coaching job, the show went dark for a full year rather than limp along with a diminished format. Manning’s Omaha Productions team was reportedly meticulous about the replacement, unwilling to install a placeholder in a chair that particular and that hard to fill, and Kuechly, evidently, is the man they judged worthy.

The pairing is expected to debut on the ESPN app in October, with the run, per Marchand, carrying through ESPN’s Super Bowl coverage.

Because The Breakdown runs through Manning’s Omaha Productions deal with ESPN rather than an actual ESPN staff contract, it isn’t, technically, an ESPN job. But that doesn’t mean it’s all Kuechly has in store.

Netflix, expanding its NFL package from two games to five this year — including an opening-week matchup in Australia, a Thanksgiving Eve game, and a Saturday night game in Week 18 — needed a signature analyst to pair with play-by-play voice Noah Eagle. Per Marchand’s reporting at the time, Kuechly auditioned with Eagle in July and the two “showed immediate chemistry,” enough that Netflix moved off the rotating-analyst approach it had used the previous two seasons and built its top broadcast team around him. Eagle and Kuechly are set to debut Sept. 10 from Melbourne when the Rams face the 49ers.

Then came CBS. At the network’s media day earlier this month, in the midst of sorting out its broadcast booths following Tony Romo’s arrest and subsequent leave of absence, CBS confirmed it was adding Kuechly in a game analyst role of its own. Back in May, Marchand reported CBS had shown interest in Kuechly for a seat on The NFL Today alongside its pursuit of Russell Wilson, following his star turn calling ESPN’s MNF Playbook altcast. That interest didn’t land him a studio chair, but it clearly kept him on CBS’s radar.

And Kuechly hasn’t gone anywhere near leaving Carolina behind, either. According to The Athletic’s Joseph Person, he’s expected to continue as a radio analyst for the Panthers, the role he first took in 2022 as his re-entry point into media after those scouting years.

The strangest part of Kuechly’s broadcasting arc is that it was never supposed to happen this fast, or maybe at all. When he retired in January 2020, Kuechly told NBC Sports’s Mike Tirico he was weighing three paths — broadcasting, coaching, front-office work — and it was clearly the operations side that lit him up in that conversation, not the prospect of a studio chair and a headset. He picked the Panthers’ scouting department, and for the better part of a year his afternoons belonged to player evaluation and advance scouting, breaking down tape not for opposing tendencies anymore but for talent, sizing up whether a given player’s skill set actually fit what Carolina needed on the roster, prepping reports so coaches wouldn’t be starting from square one when the next week’s opponent came into focus.

Broadcasting didn’t arrive so much as seep back in. It wasn’t until last December, when ESPN handed him a seat on the debut of MNF Playbook — its data-drenched Monday Night Football altcast, stitched together from Next Gen Stats, an all-22 camera angle, and predictive modeling running live — that the wider industry finally sat up. Alongside Dan Orlovsky and Field Yates, Kuechly didn’t just fit the format as much as he ran away with it, diagnosing and calling a pick-six before the ball had even left the quarterback’s hand.

It’s tempting to file it next to Tony Romo’s old party trick of predicting plays before the snap, but the comparison only goes so far. Romo’s gift was reading a defense from a broadcast booth with the benefit of hindsight and a monitor. Kuechly inflicted that same clairvoyance on opposing quarterbacks — including Romo himself — with nothing to draw on but film he’d already burned into memory.

You’re not getting Cris Collinsworth’s charm or Troy Aikman’s candor, but you’re getting an analyst who can see the game at a different level than almost anyone else on television.

For a couple of years there, Kuechly seemed to be actively avoiding letting football swallow his life again. The sport didn’t take the hint. He went from a guy who wasn’t even sure he wanted to broadcast to someone three different networks are now scrambling to carve out room for. At 35, Kuechly has become one of the more sought-after names in football media, and given how fast all of this came together, nobody wants to be the network that missed out.
