Erode Collector highlights need to support senior citizens
District Collector S. Kandasamy on Thursday (September 10) highlighted the need for more awareness among the public about the 14567 National Helpline for Senior Citizens and the 181 Women Helpline.

Speaking at an awareness and sensitisation programme on senior citizens’ welfare at Nandha College of Physiotherapy, Mr. Kandasamy said caring for senior citizens was not merely a legal obligation but also a reflection of the country’s culture.

Senior citizens, who had devoted much of their lives to their families and society, face age-related health challenges, including joint pain and neurological problems, besides psychological issues such as loneliness and stress. Spreading awareness among the younger generation about these issues was essential, he said.

Various measures were being implemented under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the welfare and safety of senior citizens. Their rights and protection were also ensured under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, he said.

Mr. Kandasamy urged students to become social ambassadors for senior citizens’ welfare. Doctors should extend services to rural areas and old-age homes and organise free physiotherapy camps, he said.

Even spending a few minutes talking to senior citizens could help reduce their stress and provide emotional support. All departments should work together to ensure their safety and dignity in the district, he said.

District Social Welfare Officer Ambika, advocate R. Kavitha, Principal V. Manivannan and students were present.
