Eagles QB Jalen Hurts makes telling admission about A.J. Brown in GQ interview

Zach Baron’s GQ profile of Jalen Hurts, published Tuesday, came out of two meetings in Philadelphia this summer, one on the Art Museum steps at 5 a.m. in June and another over a game of pool at a private club in Center City. GQ paired the written piece with the first episode of a new video series, “One More Question,” hosted by Baron. His headline asks if anyone can decode the NFL’s most cryptic quarterback. On the question of what he actually values, Hurts answered.

“Sometimes I feel like there haven’t even been any wins, really. You get so attached to the losses and how you can improve from those. I think naturally I choose the losses.”

He extended the thought into a definition of what winning requires.

“I think that’s what makes a winner, really. Before you can win, you’ve got to learn how not to lose. To be a winner is not because you’re a winner itself. It’s because you have a spirit of not accepting defeat. You’ve got this ongoing drive to say, ‘I refuse to lose.’ It’s not going to always go picture perfect. You’re going to have adversity. You’re going to have experiences that come. You have to learn from character-building moments, but it comes down to how you respond to it.”

Hurts has a Super Bowl LIX ring and the MVP award from that game, and he is the only quarterback from the 2020 draft class to win one. He also kept a photo of himself walking off the field under Kansas City confetti on his phone for the two years between the Super Bowl he lost and the one he won.

Jalen Hurts says if he were forced to choose between winning or learning, he’d rather learn, because the best winners are actually obsessed with their losses, that’s where they find the lessons that allow them to win again

Where that mindset ran into A.J. Brown

Baron put A.J. Brown’s version of events to him directly, asking if the two had grown apart before the trade. Hurts answered with a single word, “Clearly,” and left the how and the why alone, declining to speak for Brown.

“It’s a game where we’ve all got to have a shared mission. We all got to be in pursuit of the collective. And that’s not something I can speak on from his behalf, but I can tell you my focus has always been to pursue the mission.”

Brown said after Super Bowl LIX that the championship satisfied him less than he had expected, and that his own production was bound up in how good winning felt. Philadelphia traded him to New England on June 1 for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-rounder. He finished 2025 with 78 catches for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns, his lowest yardage total since his final season in Tennessee. The two men described the same four years in opposite terms, and only one of them is still in Philadelphia.

Baron asked Hurts what he would say to a teammate who wondered what the quarterback thought of him, and he answered: “Let’s win.”
