Drake Maye’s past 5 games show just how overrated he might be

The opening night of the season kicked off yesterday, featuring the New England Patriots and the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Seattle Seahawks.

Drake Maye might start being viewed as “overrated” after his performance against the Seahawks. When the lights were brightest, Maye was overshadowed by Seattle’s dominant defense and struggled to make an impact, which cost the Patriots their first win.

The term “overrated” in football doesn’t mean a player is bad. But Drake Maye has not made his case for being an elite quarterback in the NFL. In his past five games, he has thrown 7 touchdowns with 11 turnovers and 7 interceptions. Yesterday, Maye threw 10-or-more-yard passes, which were completed at a 33% rate (3/9), with 3 interceptions. Behind the line of scrimmage, he was 7 of 8.

In his career, Drake Maye has thrown 17 touchdowns with 13 interceptions against winning teams. That is not a strong suit for Maye. In the playoffs, the offense struggled. But when he plays teams with a losing record, he balls out. He has thrown 36 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Drake Maye has new weapons for this team, so why is he struggling? His decision-making was very bad, and he threw many balls in harm’s way, which led to interceptions. The offensive line played better in the passing game too. In the Super Bowl, they struggled, but they made their adjustments. Also, the team went out and acquired AJ Brown, who later suffered an injury, but you can’t say resources aren’t there for him.

If Maye can’t beat good teams, how is she going to play against the Steelers in week 2, go to Jacksonville for a 1:00 game, and then face her division rival, the Bills, in Buffalo? This isn’t an overreaction; the Patriots could start their season 0-4 in their 2026 campaign.

The AFC is full of contenders, and if they do start 0-4, then there will be no playoffs, and fans will be questioning if Drake Maye is their franchise guy. It is a tough task for Maye, as this continues to be an ongoing trend of struggling against good teams. If Maye limits his turnovers, the Patriots can turn their season around.
