The accused was identified as C. Kumar (55), Perambalur district organiser of the DMK Adi Dravidar Welfare Wing and lessee of a blue metals quarry at Elambalur.
Police sources said they received information in the early hours of Thursday that stones were being quarried at Elambalur hill in violation of the quarrying conditions. Acting on the information, a police team raided the blue metals quarry and found a stone breaker machine being used to quarry stones at the prohibited hour. The vehicle operator fled the spot on noticing the police team.
Later, an official of the Geology and Mining Department in Perambalur district lodged a complaint with the Perambalur police, stating that stones were being broken during the prohibited night hours in violation of quarrying rules.
The Perambalur police subsequently arrested quarry lessee Kumar and booked a case against him under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
He was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Perambalur and released on his own bail, the sources said.
