Despite a rainy forecast for Chapel Hill, there should be plenty of excitement amongst the fans in attendance. . The (1-1) is coming off a 48-14 smackdown of Tusculum in Week One. The Buccaneers play at the FCS level, but the Tar Heels also need to prepare as if they're facing an FBS squad.
What does UNC need to do defensively for a big victory in their 2026 home opener? Keep reading below for our five keys to a Week two victory:
Neutralize the running game
ETSU ran for 225 yards against Tusculum last week. TCU running back Jeremy Payne totaled 142 rushing yards against North Carolina in Week Zero.
The Tar Heels should have an easier time slowing down the Buccaneers' rushing attack, but their run defense needs to showcase a noticeable improvement if a 2-0 start is coming. If UNC's run defense excels early, they'll force ETSU to employ a pass-heavy offense.
Continue bursting through the trenches
Lewis was virtually unstoppable against TCU, with the sophomore defensive lineman recording a game-high five tackles and 4.5 TFLs. Melkart Abou-Jaoude forced a fumble and continued to showcase himself as a top pass-rusher, while Leroy Jackson had himself a day with eight tackles.
North Carolina should have an easier time getting to the backfield on Saturday, but needs to approach ETSU like it's an FBS opponent. If the Tar Heels build a big lead early, they'll be able to play some backup pass rushers.
Shine in the first quarter
After the first quarter of Week Zero, UNC found itself locked in a 10-10 tie with TCU, looking well en route to an offensive shootout.
North Carolina's defense quickly adjusted after allowing 10 points in that first quarter, shutting the Horned Frogs out in quarters 2-4.
The Tar Heels will likely shine on defense again Saturday, but if they can start shining in the first 15 minutes, they're on track to a 2-0 start.
Bill Belichick needs to call plays again
Being down a coach is never easy for a football team, but UNC made it work without defensive coordinator Steve Belichick in Week Zero.
Bill quickly gained an NFL reputation for his defensive-minded coaching, which showed again vs. TCU. North Carolina did just enough offensively, but defense shined through during the upset.
The Tar Heels likely remain without Steve in Week Two. If Bill calls plays, expect UNC to remain undefeated at the start of a loaded 2026 schedule.
Do NOT let feet off the gas
In 2025, North Carolina let teams back into games when it had leads, which wasn't often. Remember, the Tar Heels nearly lost to Stanford in early November, but pulled out a victory.
If you sense a recurring theme in this article, UNC didn't let those same mistakes happen in Week Zero this season. When the Tar Heels faced adversity against the Horned Frogs, they quickly responded.
North Carolina will likely build a sizable advantage against ETSU in Week Two. After that happens, the Tar Heels need to continue playing strong defense.
