It’s September, hockey’s at the end of the month, and the Boston Bruins are still quiet, but there is plenty of news going around the NHL.
In Bruins news, Frederic Brunet is “more ready than ever” to grab an NHL roster spot. He spoke on NESN’s The Hockey Hub this week about what the next few weeks may have in store, his goals, and his best friend. Training camp opens in two weeks, and there are 27 days until the home opener.
Elsewhere around the league, the New Jersey Devils made a trade with the Predators last night. They snatched Luke Evangelista for two draft picks, and there are instant grades on the trade. The Ducks are retiring a franchise legend’s number, making it three number retirements in the 2026-27 season. The Rangers reportedly signed Eeli Tolvanen. There’s another trade package for Connor Hellebuyck, and more.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Trade! The New Jersey Devils acquired Luke Evangelista from the Nashville Predators for a conditional 2028 first-rounder and a 2028 second-round pick. Evangelista finished with a career-high 56 points (12-44–56) in 81 games last season, and is signed through next season at $3M.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Shortly after the trade, James Nichols dished out some grades. The Devils already have the guys who can score; now they have the guy to feed them. Evangelista is a connector. They may have given up a lot, but Sunny Mehta is an analytics guy, and the analytics support the big package.
Sportsnet: The Anaheim Ducks are retiring Ryan Getzlaf’s No. 15 on January 30. Getzlaf, the top scorer in Ducks history, picked up 1,019 points (282-737–1,019) in 1,157 games and won the Stanley Cup in 2007. The Nashville Predators will be in town for the retirement game.
Getzlaf is the third number retirement announced for the 2026-27 season, joining Patrice Bergeron and Anze Kopitar.
Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers were reportedly active in the free agent market yesterday. They signed Eeli Tolvanen to a one-year deal worth $1.5M, according to PuckPedia. Tolvanen finished with 36 points (12-24–36) in 78 games with Seattle last season.
NHLTradeRumors.me: We talked about a proposed package that would send Connor Hellebuyck to Buffalo; how about Carolina? Dave Litman pulled a trade proposal that two high-ranking NHL executives approved.
Sportsnet: Matthew Mayich, a Blues prospect at Arizona State, collapsed during an Aug. 20 on-campus workout. His attorney, Rob Carey, said that Mayich is still incapacitated and that his condition is highly unlikely to change.
Jonah Sigel (via 𝕏): It sounds like Sportsnet has let both Elliotte Friedman’s and Kevin Bieksa’s contracts expire, and now they’re both free agents. They can always return to Sportsnet, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

San Jose Hockey Now (via YouTube): Sheng Peng had former Shark Kurtis Gabriel on the SJHN Podcast. Gabriel talked about plenty of topics, including mental health, but the one that made waves on social media was regarding Evander Kane. The clip starts when the conversation veers toward Kane, and Gabriel goes on to describe their differences while playing in San Jose.
