All arrangements are in place for the three-day extended Keralam State committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in Kozhikode from September 13.

Party sources told The Hindu on Thursday that the meeting was being held against the backdrop of the drubbing suffered by the CPI(M) and the Left Democratic Front in the 2026 Assembly elections in the State.

“The election defeat is seen not in isolation but as the result of a weakening of the party organisation, its political line and strategies, and their implementation. In the normal course, important leadership decisions related to Communist parties are taken either at Party Congress meetings or at specially convened plenum events. Extended meetings are held when both these are not in session, but there is a need to discuss important ideological and organisational issues,” the sources said.

Organising committee chairperson P.A. Mohamed Riyas, MLA, general convener and CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretary M. Mehboob, and treasurer and former MLA A. Pradeepkumar told the media that around 300 people, including State committee members, district secretariat members from across the State, and members of the party’s mass organisations would attend the event. Polit Bureau members too would be present. General secretary M.A. Baby would open the meeting on September 13 at AKG Auditorium near the CPI(M) Kozhikode district committee office.

Mr. Riyas said the meeting would discuss a report prepared by the State committee on the election debacle, after two days of discussions among State committee and State secretariat members. The central committee of the party had already published a review report on the Assembly elections. The extended State committee meeting would conclude with a public rally which would culminate at the Freedom Square on the Kozhikode beach on September 15. Around a lakh people were expected to attend the rally. Mr. Riyas said the district committees too would hold follow-up discussions in the coming months.

The CPI(M) leader said family gatherings were being held by the 271 committees in the district ahead of the meeting. Around a lakh people had attended these events. Around 250 local committees had so far organised these events and the rest would be completed by Friday.

An artists’ camp was held at the Government Higher Secondary School, Karaparamba, on August 29 and a meeting of cultural activists, writers, and artists was held in Kozhikode city on Thursday, Mr. Riyas added.
