The Dallas Cowboys are 1-0 in the preseason for the first time in a long time.

It was 2017 when Dallas last started a preseason undefeated, but it took a hard-fought game against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday night to get there. Things began a bit rough, but ultimately the Cowboys offense and defense each settled to put some things on tape that we are all going to enjoy even more after a night’s sleep.

Camden Brown was easily the game’s MVP as he scored both touchdowns for the boys in blue (and silver). Jaydon Blue, James Houston, Michael Trigg, and others all had their moments as well.

Below you will find our recap of the game as it happened.

It is officially football season!

First Quarter

The Dallas Cowboys won the toss for their preseason opener… hopefully a sign of things to come. It was decided that they were defer so Christian Parker’s new-look defense was on the field to start.

Unfortunately things did not exactly go well. Drew Lock marched the Seahawks down the field for a game-opening touchdown. It didn’t help that the Cowboys committed two costly penalties to help move things along, and it specifically didn’t help for Caelen Carson that he was the guilty party for both of them (pass interference and facemask).

SEAHAWKS TOUCHDOWN (Drew Lock to Montorie Foster, 5 yards): COWBOYS 0, SEAHAWKS 7

Sam Howell got the start at quarterback, but nobody looked good on the first possession. Jaydon Blue kind of did, but it wasn’t enough to stop a three and out and punt.

Thankfully the Cowboys then forced a three and out of their own. Christian Parker, ladies and gentlemen!

The quarter ended with the Dallas offense moving the ball thanks to Jonathan Mingo (seriously) and Jaydon Blue.

Second Quarter

Blue and Mingo kept up their contributions when the break was over, but it was not enough to carry things all the way into the endzone. A third down miscommunication between Sam Howell and Anthony Smith led to the Cowboys calling in Mr. Reliable for a three-pointer.

COWBOYS FIELD GOAL (Brandon Aubrey, 29 yards): COWBOYS 3, SEAHAWKS 7

Jalen Milroe was in for Seattle at this point and as they started moving… Caelen Carson was called for another penalty. This time it was holding. Having three to your name before the second quarter is halfway over is never a good thing.

Seattle got into field goal range before it was all said and done, but Jason Myers pushed it right. The Cowboys took over with about two minutes to go before the half.

The Cowboys got themselves into striking distance… and boy did they strike. Sam Howell found Camden Brown for the first Dallas Cowboys touchdown of the year!

COWBOYS TOUCHDOWN (Sam Howell to Camden Brown, 39 yards): COWBOYS 10, SEAHAWKS 7

For an early moment it appeared as if Seattle was going to find a way to squeak some points out before the break… but then James Houston took over.

Dallas went to the locker room with the lead.

Third Quarter

The second half marked the pass over from Sam Howell to Joe Milton, and things began rather well.

Camden Brown, Michael Trigg, and Anthony Smith helped out from a pass-catching standpoint, but Milton also got on the move and showed out as an athlete. All told he looked really put-together. His passes were a thing of beauty.

Dallas got down to a 3rd and 1 up against the goal line, and Brian Schottenheimer even called timeout right before it to make sure things worked out the right way. The Cowboys ran a quarterback sneak to move those chains.

Right after they did… Camden Brown struck again.

Seriously. How impressive is this?

COWBOYS TOUCHDOWN (Joe Milton to Camden Brown, 2 yards): COWBOYS 17, SEAHAWKS 7

The defense was able to stand tall for their first second half opportunity, and they gave the ball back to Milton and Co. for another shot. Nothing happened and Dallas punted away and then saw a huge return to make things worse.

Seattle got down near the goal line (ish) and was staring at a fourth and short that they decided to take into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

The Seahawks were unable to convert and the Cowboys took over. You always like to see that.

With a 10-point lead at their back the Cowboys weren’t exactly aggressive, and after gaining just 19 yards they booted the ball back to the home team.

The Seahawks were unable to do much yet again, and they punted the ball away… this was when disaster struck.

Traeshon Holden tried to field it near the Cowboys’ endzone and unfortunately muffed the punt. Seattle recovered and thanks to penalty began on the Cowboys’ 5-yard line.

The defense stood tall, though! Seriously! Isaiah Land got to Jalen Milroe when Seattle went for it on fourth down (it’s the preseason) and ultimately the Seahawks lost 10 yards on the possession.

The Cowboys were able to grind things out to the end of the game, something that Brian Schottenheimer surely enjoyed. With that the Cowboys won their preseason opener for the first time since 2017 by a final score of 17-7.

Onward!
