The issue came up during a discussion on the contract for removing sand accumulated along road medians and on main roads. East Zone chairman and DMK councillor Ilakkumi Izhamselvi Karthik pointed out that sand continued to remain at several locations and said there was inadequate monitoring of the work. A similar situation prevailed in the South Zone, she said.
Councillors noted that the contracts, which were awarded separately for the five zones, had been extended several times since they were first awarded in August 2025. They questioned the need to continue with the same contractors instead of calling for fresh tenders.
Ward 34 councillor N. Malathi also objected to repeatedly extending contracts to the same contractors and pointed out that the work had not been carried out adequately across all the zones. Councillors said similar issues existed in several other Corporation works as well.
Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said repeated extensions were not the appropriate practice and that fresh tenders should be invited. He said the matter would be examined.
A total of 129 subjects were placed before the Council, of which one subject relating to the proposed hygienic and healthy food street near VOC Park was withdrawn. Councillors opposed the proposal as a food street was already functioning near the park.
