Contract signed: Liverpool confirm new deal for defender in official club announcement

Liverpool have confirmed that one defender at the club has signed a new contract on Thursday.

The Reds are in the midst of a transitional phase in terms of their first-team defensive options, with the long-serving Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez into the final year of their respective deals, and youngsters such as Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni poised to hopefully form a lasting centre-back partnership in future seasons.

LFC also have a plethora of defenders in the academy ranks who’ll be hoping to break into the senior squad fully over the next couple of years, such as Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye, and another up-and-coming prospect at the club is now celebrating a significant staging post in his career.

Lucas Clarke signs professional contract with Liverpool

As confirmed via liverpoolfc.com on Thursday morning, Lucas Clarke has signed his first professional contract with Liverpool.

The 17-year-old – who joined from Manchester City midway through the 2024/25 campaign – has committed his long-term future to the Merseyside giants by putting pen to paper at the AXA Training Centre.

The teenager featured regularly in the Under-18 Premier League North last season and also made three appearances in the UEFA Youth League.

A huge moment for Clarke in his fledgling career

Congratulations to Lucas on signing his first professional contract, a joyous moment for any young footballer in the fledling stages of their career.

His profile on the official LFC website describes him as a ‘composed centre-back’, and the club evidently have tremendous faith in him by offering him professional terms with the Reds.

A first-team debut is likely to remain some way off for now, but the goal for Clarke for this coming season will be to gain under-21 recognition and maintain his tremendous rate of progression in the academy.

There are several young centre-backs queuing up to hopefully replace Van Dijk and Gomez in the long-term at Anfield, so competition for those two places in the senior XI will be frantic, but Liverpool clearly believe that the ex-Man City starlet is capable of making that giant leap over the next few years.

We wish the 17-year-old all the best for the season ahead – here’s hoping his star will continue to ascend over the next 12 months!
