KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – As football time in Tennessee inches closer, with the Volunteers kicking off three weeks from today, speculation about who will be under center for the team has only grown. While Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel was characteristically non-committal when asked about Tennessee quarterbacks Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre, he seemed encouraged by both freshman signal-callers. “I like the growth from both of those guys,” Heupel said. “[Their] fundamentals and technique continue to get better.” Despite Heupel’s positive outlook, Tennessee fans still have reason for concern, as Brandon and MacIntyre have attempted a combined nine passes at the collegiate level. Fortunately for the Volunteers, the rest of the offense appears poised to put either quarterback in a position to succeed. The offensive line, in particular, will likely be Tennessee’s strongest offensive asset. Ory Williams, who did not allow a single sack across 154 offensive snaps for LSU last season, along with David Sanders Jr., a freshman All-American in 2025, will man the tackle positions for Tennessee.  The interior offensive line, which will be imperative for Tennessee’s rush-dependent offense, will likely be manned by All-SEC guard Wendell Moe, senior Sam Pendleton, and junior Jesse Perry. “[Perry] understands the game at an extremely high level,” Heupel said. “Jesse’s versatility is a huge part for us on the offensive line.” With running back DeSean Bishop, receivers TK Keys, Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley, and tight end Ethan Davis, the Volunteers quarterbacks will also be surrounded by one of the nation’s top skill position groups. Unfortunately for the Volunteers, however, they will be without one of their top returners on defense, as safety Edrees Farooq will miss the entire 2026 season with a knee injury sustained in practice Friday. Farooq, who started all thirteen games for Tennessee a season ago, totaled 76 tackles, to go along with three passes defended and a pair of interceptions. The junior safety was perhaps best known, though, for takeaways in the secondary, forcing a team-high four fumbles. “I hate it for Edrees,” Heupel said. “[He has] had a great offseason.” Though Farooq’s injury undoubtedly adds a new roadblock for Heupel & Co. to hurdle, the Volunteers fortunately have strong depth at the safety position. TJ Metcalf, a senior transfer from Michigan, will now be a central piece for Tennessee’s defensive backfield.  Having already competed in the SEC with the Arkansas Razorbacks from 2023-24, Metcalf is familiar with the conference’s myriad of dynamic offensive schemes. Metcalf is also known to perform at his best in high-stakes games, posting a combined 17 tackles and one pass breakup in games against Texas and Ohio State last season. Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane also makes a strong case to fill in for Farooq, having already played for Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles last season. Though Farooq’s presence is far from easily replaceable, the junior safety combines a versatile skill set with an elite physical profile. To go along with his 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame, Lane also possesses tremendous speed and athleticism, making him an excellent open-field tackler. As the Volunteers are now just 21 days away from their September 5 season opener against the Furman Paladins, one can only hope they avoid further injuries to key contributors.
