College Coaches Believe Duke, Jon Scheyer Due for Some 'Luck'

Outside of a few teams, Duke has been the best in all of college basketball over the past few years. Even without a national title, one can make a strong argument that the Blue Devils have been the best team year in and year out since Jon Scheyer took over.  Unfortunately, until Duke wins a national championship and does what's needed in March Madness, it won't be viewed that way. This program is built on winning national championships, so anything less will be viewed as a problem. Heading into next season, Duke's roster is a bit different than it typically is. Not only do the Blue Devils have a boatload of talent, but they have some veteran players. That isn't something we've really said in recent years, but guys like John Blackwell, along with some of the returners, paired with Scheyer, should put the Blue Devils in a prime position to win it all. We also have to factor in that Duke has faced some bad luck. At some point, there has to be something that goes Duke's way, at least you would think if it continues playing at this type of level. That's something coaches told CBS when recently speaking about how they view Duke heading into next season. "Because they get the best players and the most talent. They came close the last couple of years and then f----ing went out and spent big again. When you're paying guys so much money like they are, and you're getting them there, they should be great." "Can't believe I'm saying this, but if Duke's frontcourt is good AT ALL, they are in pole position." "I'm buying on Duke. Think they have the best blend of returning talent and acquisition. Plus, the way their year has ended the last two years in a collapse, they're due for some good luck." Luck can be as simple as a couple of shots falling in the first half of a March Madness game to put Duke up five at halftime rather than being down a couple of points. It doesn't have to be some prayer that ended Duke's year last season.  There are plenty of other ways to be lucky, so Scheyer and the Blue Devils will have to hope that's how things play out.
