The New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez might finally be moving closer to the contract extension both sides have discussed throughout the offseason.
Christian “Coach Flight” White, who has trained Gonzalez since 2023, offered an encouraging update during an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz.”
“I think we’re getting close,” White said, according to NBC Sports Boston.
White made it clear that he has not discussed every detail of the negotiations with Gonzalez and is not directly involved in the talks. His optimism is based largely on the cornerback’s recent mood.
“Just from his mood, his vibe,” White said. “I can’t sit here and tell you guys that I’ve talked to him about it. I can just tell he’s in good spirits, so he’s obviously hearing some good things.”
White added that he “wouldn’t be shocked” if the Patriots and Gonzalez reached an agreement before New England’s Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 9.
Patriots’ Contract Offers Reportedly Improving
Gonzalez’s negotiations appeared to stall after Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million extension that included $101 million guaranteed. Witherspoon and Gonzalez share the same agent, Reggie Johnson, making the Seattle star’s deal an obvious benchmark in the negotiations.
White said New England’s proposals have improved and suggested the Patriots have presented a deal that could slightly exceed Witherspoon’s contract in certain areas.
“I don’t know if it’s gonna be the same guaranteed money-wise, but I just know the offers have been getting better,” White said. “It sounds like there’s a little bit more movement.”

The structure of the proposed agreement appears to be the primary issue.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft previously said New England offered Gonzalez a contract that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. White said that statement did not tell the complete story because some of the original contract language was “kind of trash.” The total value of a contract can create an impressive headline, but guaranteed money, incentives and payment structure determine its actual strength.
Those details appear to be what the two sides are still attempting to resolve.
Gonzalez has publicly acknowledged feeling frustrated by the lengthy process, but White emphasized that the Pro Bowl cornerback wants to remain in New England. Gonzalez recently purchased a home in the area and has developed a strong connection to the organization.
“He’s expressed to everybody that he wants to be there,” White said.
New England already exercised Gonzalez’s fifth-year option for 2027, so the Patriots are not in immediate danger of losing him. A new agreement before Week 1 would still eliminate a major distraction and secure one of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks for the long term.
The deal is not finished, but the latest update provides the clearest reason for optimism in weeks.
