Chelsea 2026/27 Premier League preview: Top-four finish the minimum target

After becoming one of the Premier League’s main ‘banter clubs’ last season, Chelsea will head into the 2026/27 season with a point to prove.

The scattergun approach to transfer business coupled with impatience towards managers ultimately took a heavy toll on the Blues’ fortunes last term.

Xabi Alonso has been appointed to steady the ship, and it will be intriguing to see if he can get Chelsea heading in the right direction again.

Without further ado, read on as we assess Chelsea’s hopes of enjoying a productive 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

Chelsea Premier League season 2026/27 preview

There appears to have been thought given to Chelsea’s transfer business this summer, suggesting Alonso has more control over proceedings than his predecessors.

Morgan Rogers’ big-money arrival from Aston Villa is the headline signing, and he should prove to be an astute acquisition for the club.

Maxence Lacroix adds Premier League-proven quality to a defensive unit that has previously contained far too many underachievers.

If Chelsea can keep Levi Colwill fit, they will have a central defensive pairing that is at least on par with other potential title contenders.

The signing of wing-back Marco Palestra suggests Alonso will be tactically flexible, as evidenced by his use of a back three and back four during pre-season.

On paper, Chelsea have a squad which should challenge for the title. However, their hopes will likely rest on two key elements – keeping Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer returning to form.

Fernandez has been strongly linked with Manchester City, but they appear to have switched their attention to Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi.

That could be good news for Chelsea, who should not be contemplating selling Fernandez if they are serious about winning the Premier League.

City may still return for Fernandez before the summer transfer window closes, but Chelsea must resist their overtures if they come calling.

With Palmer likely to be well rested after being omitted from England’s World Cup squad, Chelsea fans have every reason to feel optimistic.

Not featuring in European competitions will give Alonso more time to work with his squad, which could work to their advantage this season.

Mounting a sustained title challenge may ultimately prove to be too much to ask, but securing a top-four finish should not be beyond Chelsea this season.
